Taumoeba
Taumoeba is a single-celled, amoeba-like organism discovered in the upper atmosphere of the planet Adrian in the Tau Ceti system. It is the natural predator of Astrophage, the alien microbe that is consuming the energy of Earth's sun and threatening all life on Earth. The discovery of Taumoeba provides the key to saving both Earth and the Eridian homeworld, as it can be bred and engineered to consume Astrophage in the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld, the planets where Astrophage breeds.
Discovery and Initial Characterization
Taumoeba was first identified by Ryland Grace and his Eridian companion Rocky after they collected an air sample from the Astrophage breeding zone of Adrian, the planet at the center of the Tau Ceti system's Petrova line. Grace observed the sample under a microscope and saw a diverse ecosystem of microorganisms, including a predator that actively attacked and consumed Astrophage cells. The predator was an amorphous blob, like an amoeba, that would envelop clumps of Astrophage, causing them to lose their characteristic opacity and die. Grace named the organism "Taumoeba," a portmanteau of "Tau Ceti" and "amoeba." Rocky confirmed that the existence of a predator explained a key mystery: the population of Astrophage migrating to and from Adrian was equal, rather than having twice as many returning to the star as expected. This balance indicated a natural predator was keeping the Astrophage population in check.
Biology and Environmental Tolerances
Taumoeba proved to be a remarkably resilient organism. It could survive in a near-vacuum and across a wide temperature range, from -180 degrees Celsius to 107 degrees Celsius. It required carbon dioxide to survive and would starve without it. Crucially, Taumoeba was found to be extremely sensitive to elemental nitrogen (N2). Even a small amount of nitrogen in its environment would kill it within seconds. This sensitivity was a major obstacle, as the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld—the planets where Astrophage breeds in the Solar and Eridian systems—contain significant amounts of nitrogen (3.5% and 8% respectively).
Engineering Nitrogen Resistance
To make Taumoeba a viable tool for saving two worlds, Grace and Rocky embarked on a program of directed evolution. They created a series of sealed chambers with controlled atmospheres, each containing a slightly higher concentration of nitrogen. They would introduce Taumoeba into these chambers, and only the individuals that survived the nitrogen exposure would be allowed to breed and produce the next generation. This process was repeated over many generations, with Grace and Rocky carefully selecting the hardiest survivors. The goal was to create a strain, which they called "Taumoeba-80," that could tolerate the 8% nitrogen concentration found on Threeworld. After weeks of work, they succeeded in breeding Taumoeba-82.5, a strain that could survive and thrive in the nitrogen-rich environments of both Venus and Threeworld.
Unintended Consequences and Contamination
The success of the breeding program had a dangerous side effect. The Taumoeba-82.5 strain, which had evolved to survive in the xenonite breeder tanks, also developed the ability to slowly work its way through the molecular structure of xenonite itself. This allowed the engineered Taumoeba to escape its containment and contaminate the Hail Mary's fuel supply, consuming the Astrophage and leaving the ship dead in space. The same contamination occurred on Rocky's ship, the Blip-A, destroying his fuel and stranding him. This unintended consequence forced Grace to make a critical choice: continue home to Earth or turn back to rescue his friend. He chose to rescue Rocky, launching the four beetle probes with samples of Taumoeba-82.5 to save Earth in his stead.
Role in Saving Two Worlds
Taumoeba-82.5 was the ultimate solution to the Astrophage crisis. Grace sent the beetles to Earth with sealed mini-farms containing the engineered Taumoeba, along with instructions for deployment. The plan was to introduce the Taumoeba into the upper atmosphere of Venus, where it would consume the breeding Astrophage population. On Erid, Rocky carried a supply of the same strain. Years later, Grace learned from Eridian astronomers that Sol had returned to its full brightness, confirming that the Taumoeba had successfully eradicated the Astrophage from the Solar System. The engineered predator had saved both Earth and Erid from extinction.
